Step Away From the Apostrophe

So I’ve seen a couple people post the same website as their favorite and I must say they know good grammar tips when they see them! My favorite website is also the Grammar Girl (quickanddirtytips.com). I am drawn to the way she words things that are concise without a ton of fluff and rambling. That’s what always confuses me. When people try to over explain the idea, they end up making it ten times worse.
This picture seems to fit well into our assignments we had this week. I am sure most people wouldn’t think twice about the over usage of an apostrophe. I would assume they would have a few English savvy people in their building that would have been able to catch this error before they printed huge lettering to go on the side of a van. Now I understand this is a place that makes cakes for all occasions (which I’m really surprised that “cakes” and “occasions” don’t have an apostrophe too. Something else more frightening to think about is what the actual message on the cake would be.
This is a common mistake. People use an apostrophe “S” to pluralize something when in reality; they’re making it the owner of something.
