Grammar Sites: Blog #5

I have had the opportunity to work with many different “OWLs” throughout my college career. However, the OWL that I use most frequently is Owl from the Purdue University found at the following website: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/1/. This website was suggested to me by one of the communication teachers here at Weber State. I have mainly used this website to properly write APA citations. However, throughout this week I have looked more into the site and noticed several other options that it offers. Some of these resources would be very helpful to our class as editors.

It provides resources to help with the mechanics of a sentence, grammar, punctuation, etc. This website even offers information on the basics of the writing process. I think that these websites are so useful. I have definitely seen how they’ve helped me be able to properly prepare papers for many of my classes.

We should definitely take the time to search out different websites and resources that are available to us. With technology we really have so much help, I just don’t think we truly appreciate it. We live in a fast pace world, in which we tend accomplish each task as fast as possible. However, we would be more successful if we simply used the easy to reach resources that lay at our fingerprints.

Mistake:

My editing mistake from today was in one of my homework assignments. My teacher provided the class with a list of “to do” items. However, on one of the items my teacher confused some letters, switching them around. This little mistake of switching two letters changed the outcome of my entire homework assignment. It was in an html document. The change in letters changed the color of the text from green to blue. Editing is very important because it can have greater effects than you think.

  1. I love OWL by Purdue as well! It is my go-to website for any English questions that I have! That is a bummer about your homework! Hopefully the teacher still counted it and realized her mistake before other students made the same mistake.

  2. I have been using Purdue's OWL for a long time. The first time I used it was to learn proper citation rules. What's great is that you can keep using these resources long after you've graduated.
