Valeria Torena

My name is Valeria Torena. For the last few years I have started to grow up. Going to college has been a gratifying experience. I am really excited for this semester and especially this class. I love writing. Right now I am working on a novel. This is a project that I have been thinking and working on for a long time. School has been the priority though and I haven’t invested the adequate time to it. My major is Spanish with a minor in communication. Graduation is around the corner for me. Spring will be here shortly. My goal is to be a linguist for the FBI or an interpreter for the United Nations. If those don’t work out I would be happy to stay home and work on my novel. I will be taking the GRE in a month or so. The master’s programs I am thinking about are world languages or linguistics.

Reading has been another distraction on this journey. I love to write but reading other work is entertaining to me. I also love to watch movies and tv shows on weekends. Mostly at home. I don’t limit myself to certain genres. There are favorites for me in every category. Those movies I will usually watch more than once. Books and movies let me dive into another world. I get inspiration from the to create my own world when I write. My favorite movies include, The Bone Collector, The Sixth Sense and Hitch. The only show that I watch consistently is Criminal Minds. I absolutely love it.

Some of my other hobbies include running and dancing. Although running is really hard for me it is the workout that gives me the most satisfaction. I am currently training for a half marathon that I will be doing in a few months. Running everyday is difficult but it is definitely worthwhile. Dancing is another activity that I enjoy. I started Latin dancing three years ago. Since I started I have not stopped. The first time I danced I couldn’t believe that I had gone all my life not doing it. Now I dance at home. Twice a month with my friends too if I can. Latin dancing is on the top of my list of favorite things to do. Bachata and Merengue are the two rhythms that I love the most.

Most of my time is spent at work and school. I don’t get out much these days. I have started to concentrate more on school and family. Unless it is something that doesn’t come up often I will pass it up. I will be attending Comic Con this month. This is the first time I will be going. I am really excited and hope to get some awesome pictures to share. Comic Con is a place where ideas and fantasies come together. It is the realization of someone’s creativity.

I want to learn new things this semester. Acquiring knowledge is important but loving to learn is essential.

  1. I wish that I could write a novel. It sounds so rewarding and fun, however, I have the attention span of a squirrel. So, usually I can even finish a book without moving on to the next. Comic Con is going to be great! I'll be there as well. And you'll be able to meet so many cool authors! My fiancee loves meeting the smaller guys and buying books!

  2. Valeria,

Good on you for writing a novel! I hear that will be helpful when in the midst of obtaining your MA in Communications. I had completely forgotten about Criminal Minds until this post... You've inspired me! I will be watching an episode tonight. I love working with people who enjoy working out. I am training for a triathlon and can't wait to actually cross it off of my bucket list. Right now I am having to take things slow due to my IT band going out of whack. I will say that although running is the hardest for me to go out and do... It is the most beneficial to me both mentally and physically. I'm going on 6 weeks without, and about to go crazy.
