Kael Applegate Blog #1

Hi All,
The name is Kael Applegate, and I’m currently a Junior here at WSU. You would be right to consider me a super, SUPER senior. I started college right out of high school working on my generals for the first year. Like many students I was very unsure of whom I was, what caused my brain to tick, and what really excited me (pertaining to education of course ;)). Essentially, I was “faking it until I made it”, but that proved to be the ineffective route real quick. That being said, I’ve changed my major from Business Administration, to Psychology, to Nursing, back to Business Administration, and finally to Communications. I will term my indecisiveness as, the itch.
Throughout my college career I have also managed to work full-time, and have been fortunate to work for many companies/businesses that have brought me right back here today. After finishing my freshmen year I worked as the corporate trainer/project manager for the frozen yogurt company, Spoon Me. This job required that I travel across the U.S., and because of this I chose to take some time off from my studies in order to gain some work and life experiences aside from college. I worked with a master franchiser in California many times, and because of my work ethic he offered me a position at his medical sales company working as an executive assistant to the entire executive team. I had always wanted to live near the beach, and you had better believe I jumped all over this opportunity. I worked at this company for just over a year, but had the itch to try something new. Somehow I found myself interviewing for a renowned, successful Hollywood attorney. Fortunately for me, she felt the both of us were not the right fit for each other but let me down softy saying, “I’m going to adopt you as Utah Kid, and make sure to find you the perfect job.” She gave me a few hurdles to follow through with in order to prove I was serious, and determined not just about a job, but life in general. One of the requirements was that I attend her class at UCLA, Music Law & Business. This class taught everything from writing press releases all of the way to the nitty-gritty laws that come along with this type of industry. After a few weeks I received a call from the attorney asking if I was still in the market for a new job, which I was. Long story short, I was working as the personal assistant to the world famous DJ, deadmau5. I did so for a few years, but still had that damn itch! Obtaining a collegiate degree has always been important to me, but this job was not in any way conducive to that. I then went on to work for an ad agency, and music house that both work on commercials for companies like, VW, Dr. Pepper, Infinity, and Snapple. Although I really enjoyed all of my past jobs, I found that these two were my favorite, and allowed me to find my niche.
Now, while I did take a few years away from college I feel each one of these work experiences helped push me into the right direction, and were more valuable than plugging through college for 4 years, and to then jump into a career I hoped to be passionate about. Throughout these work experiences I have learned to write, market, communicate, and advertise effectively. These successful companies helped bring out hidden talents of mine, in which brought me back here to Utah. I’ve never considered myself creative until these positions required me to write, and work with teams to come up with enticing ideas.
Being that this class is Editing I’m very excited. I’m the person that checks each text to make sure all of the grammar is spot on, and if I do happen to make a mistake I have no choice but to correct myself. Don’t even get me started on people who send me texts with the “u” instead of the “you”, or the “there”, when it’s supposed to be “they’re”. Talk about a deal breaker! I look forward to being put in my place throughout this semester, becoming a better writer, and working with all of you!

Cheers,

Kael Applegate.

  1. I agree with you on grammar. Pretty much everyone now has keyboards, which means there's no excuse for shortcuts like "u." It makes people look so uneducated, and it's very frustrating to me as well. I'm impressed you were able to work full time while going to school. To be honest, if my classes were at better times, I would also probably be working full time. Alas, the English department doesn't seem to recognize that their students work and continues to schedule classes during the middle of the day.
