The topic I wanted to write about for punctuation is the semicolon. This little dot with a comma has always puzzled me but now I see what it is used for. I have to say that in most cases I still think I would just use coordinating conjunction but it is good to know that is why they are used. It is also good to know that the goal of a semicolon is to provide a longer pause as I thought it was just for making a list.
I am someone who always try to use good grammar and punctuation when I am communicating at work or during business discussions. I am just like everyone else and I make mistakes and sometimes I catch those mistakes and other times I don't or I don't even know I made a mistake. This week I wanted to write about some of the emails I received from business professionals who write very poorly to save time on their responses. I work in an environment where there is a constant language barrier as I work with people from every continent. I can see how poor grammar can be a challenge but I think a person should give their best effort when communicating. I do the same when I try to speak to someone in French or Russian and I'm sure they may look at what I wrote and think I write poorly but at least I gave it my best effort. An example of a poorly written response is when someone writes Gr8 instead of Great. This reminds me of when someone is texting and doing this to save time, even then I'm not a fan of poor grammar. It is almost just as hard to write poorly as it is to make two extra key strokes. Professionalism is a must and unfortunately social media is making it more acceptable to write poorly.
I definitely agree! Professionals look very unprofessional when they make grammar mistakes. I hate receiving emails that look like text messages in the professional world.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a lot of these throughout the years. Even my former department head, whose first language is English, had issues with her spelling and grammar. I definitely agree that professionals should always strive to communicate with appropriate spelling and grammar.
