Punctuation: Thou art cruel

Whenever one feels the need to lose faith in humanity, all one needs to do is turn to social media.  Specifically I would like to discuss the dual social atrocity and wonder that is the Weber State Confessions.  Refer now to exhibit A:

Exhibit A

The text reads "I judge people who post picture of food and wonder is their life so pathetic that they need to fish for likes on social media."  What it should probably read is something is something along the lines of "I judge people who post pictures of food and wonder why is  their life is so pathetic, that they need to fish for "likes" on social media."  The italics indicate what I would add, whereas the crossed out word indicates what I would delete.

Refer now to Exhibit B, another online gem and a personal pet peeve of mine.  You're is indicative of the words you are.  As in "You are grammatically correct." or "You're not grammatically correct."  Misusing a relatively simple set of words like your and you're tells me the reader, that you are uneducated and careless.

Exhibit B

Who would want to be seen as uneducated and careless? This is why English is important.

  1. Oh don't even get me started on your/you're...

I dated a girl on and off for over two years and she could never figure out your/you're (keep in mind this was high school/ early college but I would constantly get texts like "your hot" "your nice" "your great" Finally I had enough of her, but I made sure on my way out to tell her to fix that grammar problem because it was too simple to mess up so much.

  2. I can relate to your pain with people who use the wrong version of a word. I try to be more understanding because my husband is one of those people. I am constantly spell checking his text messages but I am lucky because it appreciates it. He can't figure out the difference between you're/your, too/to/two, they're/their, it is pretty bad. Some people just don't know the difference. I always try and take the time to explain it to people because they may have never been taught. I don't like to assume that people are just uneducated and stupid even that may be the case sometimes.

    1. You're right, I shouldn't assume that. It's mean of me to do so. However, I won't lie and say that that isn't (unfortunately) where my mind goes first. Thank you for pointing that out to me. I shouldn't judge. :)
