The topical guide to grammar for dummies.
I have been struggling with active/passive voice for this course and in another course where we talked about it during the first week. I'm not sure why, but I have the hardest time with it. In the topical guide, it clearly states that if the subject is performing the action of the verb then is in active voice. If the subject receives the action of the verb then it is passive.
Aholic endings - The topical guide says that aholic means "one obsessed with," through slang language. It always bugs me when people say "I'm a shopaholic" or "I'm a Chocaholic" It says how the "aholic" is wrong because the suffix - ic - means "of pertaining to." Combining "ic" with Alcohol makes sense but adding the entire suffix of "aholic" doesn't make sense.
Lend/loan. The topical guide clearly states to use lend as a verb and loan as a noun. It is as simple as that.
I want a loan from the bank.
Please don't lend my brother the money to buy that nerf gun.
Irregardless - The grammar mistake or speaking mistake this week was the word irregardless. On the radio a host said "irregardless of the Oregon defense, Utah will have to score points to win the game. I wanted to rip my hair out because irregardless is not a word. Regardless was and is the word he was looking for.

Active and passive voice were difficult for me to. It is something that I didn't understand Sometimes even though something is explained it still doesn't make sense. Thanks for your clarifications on all the things above!

ReplyDeleteLike you, I have always struggled with active and passive voice. Even after reading the sections in the book about that topic, i still feel as though I have some unanswered questions.
ReplyDeleteI get very irritated as well when people use the word "irregardless"! Great blog!
I empathize with your struggles concerning active and passive voice. Whenever I have papers peer edited, graded, or just looked at, people seem to notice how my arguments are weaker because of passive voice. Maybe it's because I am passive aggressive. Thanks so much for sharing about the topic!
