Loving Headlines

I loved looking at headlines this week. I don’t look at the news much, but I found myself getting into the news from reading good headlines. I read more news this week than I have in the past four months. I didn’t find too many headlines that were bad, but a few examples are below.

Good
“Lamar can't recall family and friends, can barely speak” –NY Daily News

I would have thought this was a bad headline before reading this week’s material. I didn’t know a comma could replace “and” if both verbs have the same subject. Lamar is the subject for both verbs. I am into sports, so this headline caught my attention and I ended up reading the article.

Bad
“Caught Between ISIS and the Police State” – Google News

Who is caught between ISIS and the Police State? No subject is given, so I have no interest in reading this article.

Editing Mistake
My brother showed me a pretty funny mistake this week. It was a tattoo that said “NO REGERTS,” meaning “No Regrets.”  I feel bad for the tattoo artist that messed up this person’s arm forever. If the artist had taken Dr. Josephson’s editing class, he or she would know to edit before publishing.

  1. If you don't read the news much and you start, mistakes standout more! This is good if you are looking for good headlines and bad ones.

  2. Good examples. I feel the same way about this week. I never have time to read the news or keep up with current events. It has been fun this week reading the headlines and getting into the news.
