Working With Writers

I found this weeks assignment to be especially helpful and informative. I will be graduating this Friday and this assignment was a fitting way to end one of the more challenging courses I've taken during the past few semesters.
For my assignment I attempted to edit a media writing paper that my brother in-law had recently written. The first few minutes of our time were really awkward as I sat there looking for spelling and punctuation mistakes as I tried to think of anything that I could to try and break the awkward silence.
I remembered the section from our chapter readings this week on "Coaching Tips" where it says to get the writer talking, so I asked him "So tell me what you liked about this paper after you had written it?" That one question really helped him to open up and start to feel more comfortable with me sitting there trying to point out all of the mistakes he had made in this paper. By the end of our time together he had basically told me all of the things that I would have told him regarding the changes that needed to be made to his paper.
This was a great exercise that brought back a lot of memories from past assignments and interactions I've had over the course of my college career.

The editing mistake I found for this week came as I was applying for a job for one of the larger employers in the state of Utah. This is something they will want to get changed quickly.

  1. Congrats of your graduation!!! Ha working with other people's content can be challenging. It sounds like asking questions worked well for you and your writer.
