Web Design

I LOVED learning about website design principles this week! As I was scrolling through pages and pages of websites, it was amazing to me how different every single one was. Even though they are all using the same principles of design, the way that they interpret those principles is completely different, resulting in a unique website. Below are two examples and explanations of some important design principles. I thought these two websites were very well designed and wanted to share them!

Spacing- The website should use consistent spacing in images and type. Spacing also means not being afraid to use negative space.

This website is the epitome of good spacing. There are even spaces between each of the hexagons, the spacing between the type and lines at the top is consistent, and the center words are even spaced on top and bottom. This web page also uses negative space very effectively. It is not too much, but just enough that the web design is still simple and clean.

Usability- The website should be user friendly. When designing a website, one should think about what the user is going to DO on the website and then create the site so it is usable.

This National Geographic website is very user friendly. All of the tabs up at the top are very easily accessible and are self-explanatory. It is clear that the web designers put a lot of thought into what exactly users would be doing on this website because they have everything from maps to help them find their way to shopping for gear to make them better prepared for their trip.

  1. I completely agree that when designers and developers are making a site that one of their end goals should be designing the site with the user in mind, and how the user is going to be able to navigate through without having to second guess their decisions.
