Life as an Editor

Working with a writer is always a little bit stressful a little bit fun. I enjoy helping writers and helping them understand what is wrong with their writing. It’s even more rewarding to make a story that much better than when I started with it. I helped my friend by starting the editing phase of the third book in her trilogy. I have edited her first two books and it was such a great experience. She is always sending me chapters to read and find the holes in the story and the grammar mistakes. I have really enjoyed editing her novels and making them a better story.
This process was a little different since it was just a couple chapters I was editing and not the whole book. Her and I had talked earlier about the direction she was going with the story so I wouldn’t be totally confused. In the beginning of the process, I read over the story without making any corrections. This step is a lot harder than you would think. It takes concentration (and sheer will power sometimes) to not stop and write something down or make a correction. On the second reading, I now know what the plot is of the story (or this case the chapter). On this read through, I will make all the corrections.
My grammar mistake isn’t a grammar mistake at all. It’s just a summary of this whole class. So I guess by using a period at the end of a sentence in a text message makes me seem insincere? What's next? I'm being a rebel and will continue to use correct punctuation.
It’s been a fun semester!

  1. I definitely agree with your statement that it takes sheer will power to not edit as you write. It's difficult to write and not think. It's funny the way that a period can change the whole tone of a text message. If it's a short one or two word message a period can convey emotion. If the message is longer though, a period can act as a just a sentence separator.
